How dachshunds react when the house gets quieter in September

September has its own gentle heartbeat. After the joyful chaos of summer — the full house, the garden full of paws, the endless parade of tiny suitcases — everything softens.
The house doesn’t go quiet… just quieter. Calmer. More spacious.
And dachshunds feel that shift in their own very dachshundy ways.
The post‑summer exhale
Once the last of the summer sausages head home, there’s a moment where the whole house seems to sigh. I do too, if I’m honest.
It’s been a beautiful, busy season — full of wagging tails, meet‑and‑greets, and sunbathing sausages — and September brings that first breath of stillness.
The dogs who stay with me at this time of year often mirror that energy. They settle faster, nap deeper, and seem to enjoy the extra space to stretch out.
The “Is it just us now?” check‑in
When the house calms down, many dachshunds do a little wander. Not anxious — just curious. A slow trot from room to room, nose twitching, tail gently swaying.
It’s their way of saying, “The vibe has changed… I’m just updating my internal sausage map.”
They adjust quickly, especially with the predictable rhythm I keep in place.
My own September ritual: a one‑week holiday
Every year, right after the summer rush, I take one week off at the start of September. It’s my reset button — a chance to breathe, rest, and refill my cup before the autumn bookings begin.
And without fail… the spaces fill. September and October always book up quickly, and the sausages return ready for the cosy season.
The return of the long naps
With the house calmer and the weather cooling, dachshunds slip back into their favourite autumn hobby: serious, committed napping.
The deep, warm, snuffly kind. The kind where they melt into their beds like warm pastry. The kind where you tiptoe around because they look too peaceful to disturb.
September is nap season, and they embrace it wholeheartedly.
More closeness, more connection
A calmer house often brings out the cuddly side of sausages. They follow me from room to room. They curl into the crook of my knee. They ask for sofa time with that hopeful little eyebrow lift.
And when my husband is home in the evenings or at weekends, some sausages make a beeline for him — especially those who love a deeper voice or a bigger lap.
A spark of independence too
Interestingly, once the summer buzz fades, many dachshunds rediscover their own little routines:
revisiting toys they ignored in August
pottering around the garden with purpose
doing slow, thoughtful sniffs
choosing new favourite napping spots
The calm gives them space to think, explore, and settle into their own rhythm again.
How I support sausages during this gentle seasonal shift
September is one of my favourite months for boarding because everything feels softer. I keep things:
predictable
cosy
calm
reassuring
and full of gentle enrichment
Scatter feeds, snuffle mats, warm bedding, slow garden potters — all the grounding things that help sausages feel safe and settled.
A final thought
September isn’t silent. It’s simply softer. And dachshunds, with their big feelings and sensitive noses, respond beautifully to that change.
Some become snugglier. Some become sleepier. Some become more curious.
But all of them find comfort in the steadiness of the routine, the warmth of the house, and the humans who stay close.
